 I have done many software development projects in my history. One thing I have learned is that creating software for "real production" its a complete different breed. Any kind of software should distinguish between development and production stage. And very often you also get even more stages, like integration or quality assurance stages.   Slicing the elephant, while talking about software, usually means the transformation of old style monolithically designed solutions into better maintainable pieces of software. Why should we always strive to have good sized pieces of software components?  Why not sticking to the monolithically designed software solutions?  They have advantages too.  Yes they really do!  From a customer point of view there are many actually. You get it installed and (hopefully) up and running with a single effort. If you have problems with it, you have (hopefully) a single contact.  You pay one piece and (hopefully) get it all. If you need extensions, again one single contact, and (hopefully) only on payment. If you don't need it anymore, you can just deinstall or deactivated it. Keeping software maintainable

Software products are usually growing. Already existing functions are getting extended. Features are added. Workflows are changing. This is common thing for software products which are in real use by someone. So what is key while getting your software product bigger and more rich on functionality? In my opinion the only way to achieve this is by getting your product separated into what I call modules. Those modules can be modules in classical meaning like libraries but also of course a separation into services. Key is, those parts have to be separated in meaningful parts and those parts have to work independently. What does it mean? Working independently does not actually mean those parts need to do everything by themselves if they are deployed as singular instance.
